5. Head transplants

Medical research has now made this possible. Some people suffer from body wasting diseases while their minds are perfect. Other people are ‘brain dead’ with healthy bodies.

Should these healthy bodies be used for head transplant surgery for the ‘healthy brain’ patients?

  1. I believe that it is not a good idea to do a head transplant because in the 1950s the Soviet Union swapped dogs heads around but died due to immune reactions.and so I think it could happen to the man so there basically going to kill the man

    1. Josh, you said that there was an unsuccessful operation in the 1950s but now scientist have better technology and knowledge of the transplant and they have proved that by carrying out transplant on mice and a monkey. They man wants to have the operation and they haven't forced him into it so it isn't murder if it fails. And anyway, for a dying person, the decision to have. A head transplant is an easy one.

If they could carry out a transplant on a monkey in 1970 then they definitely do one on a human in 2016 or 2017. It is believed that scientists have already done a head transplant on someone with bone cancer and he is good after the op. I believe that head transplants should happen

  3. Is a head transplant ethical tho? Well to do one of these you will need to make sure the motivations are in true medical need for a head transplant. Before you do a head transplant you got to experiment on other living things first and make sure you paying attention because you will need the information. Because you can't just do a head transplant just instantly, you need a reason why and some information why because it might take 36 to 72 hours with 150 surgeons to complete.

What if it goes wrong? Because they tested animals and they didn't last long for sure.Like they tested Russian puppies and they lived for just under a week, Then they tested american monkeys and they just got over that and lastly they tested Chinese mice and they... Well just lingered for a day. We don't really know for sure because one little mistake and it could put a live at risk and it might end out terribly

I'm against head transplants hands, for the operation they will be 2 patients one brain dead and one paraplegic, and swapping their heads to give the paraplegic man a new body that will give him a new start. This operation sure does sound fancy and the price is backing that up as it will cost $13 million in total, is a new body worth spending that much just to change your identity. Prior to the operation they have tested on numerous animals, and on many occasions it has shown that the animals have had immune reactions that have caused animals to suffer and in some cases die. The thought that they will be trying this on humans really makes you wonder. What if the same thing happens to the man who’s having the transplant. There was also another occasion were the animals they tested on become paralyzed from there head down because of the faults. Which means never walking again.

What about the ethics you will no longer be you the next time you wake up you are someone else's master. Although the first operations will be beneficial through time people will use it for other reasons e.g to lose weight or even simply to change their identity. Another point is that the family of the donor’s body will have to live with the feeling that there Son,Dad or Cousin is still alive but is no longer there family.

Doesn’t sound like a miracle to find someone brain dead happy to donate their body and is the right size for the man’s head. The size factor is a huge point as a man who has a different body size to the head won’t make it easy to just click into place. For the operation they will cool down the body so the brain won’t die but there’s that feeling that the body won’t survive the operation which means it would have been pointless. If they are planning on using a brain dead patient they will have to consider how he became brain dead as usually the cause relates to an accident that could relate to another injury. I reckon it’s safe to say this evidence proves that head transplants are not ethical.

  5. Head transplants. They could change someone's life. Someone could have a perfectly good brain but some sort of muscular disorder. A head transplant could change all that. Sure there is a slight risk but if the patient and thier family and friendsi are willing to take that risk then it should be able to happen. Neuroscientist Sergio Canavere says that the head transplant has a 90% chance of being succesful.

Head transplants have already been carried out on mice and even a monkey and that was back when scientists didn't know as much about head transplants. Scientists claim to already have carried out a head transplant on South African Paul Horner a nod many scientists are looking to do head transplants next year. If they did a monkey head transplant back in the 1970's then they surly can do one on a human in 2016/2017.

Experts argue this is not ethical but if both the donor and the recipient are happy then it should be able to happen. This scientific breakthrough could save people's lives and change the world. So many people would benefit from a head transplant because there are so many people out their who can't walk or who can't use their brain properly. For a dying person the decision to have a head transplant is a very easy one. If head transplants continue to happen people will be used to them and more and more people will have them. This is why I think that head transplants should definitely be able to happen

  6. I'm for head transplants, it could change someone's life. There are over 1million people using wheelchairs that's 1 out of 250 people in the world who use them, each year there are 10,000 spinal cord injuries and 307,000 under age 44 use wheelchairs. Those 307,000 people have to be in a wheelchair for the rest of their lives and can't do any physical activities. But that's where head transplants come in, they switch body's and hopefully they don't need a wheel chair because they can walk.
It's better off swapping heads than switching brains because it's highly likely you are going to damage it.

  7. The costs involved would be huge. Surely it would be better to spend the money doing research to cure some diseases that affect many people or research into treating spinal injuries.
