3. GM Foods

Science has been used to alter the DNA of plants to either make them healthier (golden rice) or easier to grow in poor countries (GM aubergine). Sometimes GM foods are safer than the organic ones – NZ’s killer organic zucchini. Many people believe GM plants are harmful for people and the environment.

Should we continue to have GM foods?

  1. Scientists have made a product called Genetically Made Foods that carry all sorts of vitamins for people who need it. A example of this is golden rice which carrys vitamin A.

Genetically made foods have an increased risk of certain types of cancer. There is also concern that inserting a extra gene into a plant could cause it to produce toxins that are deadly to humans.

Scientists are worried what will happen in the long term, so your taking GM foods at your own risks.

    1. Actually Trinity, I personally think that having GM foods is a good thing because it is healthier for you to eat. All GM foods are checked before they go on the market, so you will unlikely get sick. GM foods are produced from organisms that have had changes introduced into their DNA. For farmers they mostly use soybean, corn, canola and seed oil.
So that is why i am for GM foods.

  2. I am for genetically modified foods because it can help farmers skip steps in the process, such as spraying their crops because the foods are already resistant to pests. GM foods have the potential for solving the problems of world hunger and malnutrition.

The use of GM foods has increased farmers safety by allowing them to use less pesticide, researches state it has also raised the outputs of corn, cotton and soy by 20 to 30 percent, allowing some people to survive who would not have without.

Genetically modified foods are one of the most well studied areas of biological research, the scientific research conducted so far has not detected any significant hazards directly connected with the use of GM foods and GE crops. This is the next step in evolution and it's a helpful survival factor.

The golden rice project seeks to bring vitamin A enriched rice
to market, to help prevent almost nearly 500, 000 cases of
childhood blindness and 2 million deaths all around the world.

They have been manipulating genetic make-up of plants and animals for many generations. They choose the most traditional cross breeding and involves selecting plants and animals with the most desirable characteristics (E.G. disease resistance, high yield, good meat quality) for breeding again. GM foods are all checked carefully before put on the market to everyone, so you will unlikely get sick with GM foods.

  5. I wonder about the ethics of producing GM foods for poor countries? I understand they need a regular food source but are we certain of the long term effects GM FOOD might have on our own genetic make up? I like real food! Sugar is not a good so I am not sure that GM food is food either??
